National Observatory of Athens (NOA)
The National Observatory of Athens, founded in 1842, is the oldest research centre in Greece, The Institute for Environmental Research and Sustainable Development (IERSD) is one of the three Institutes of NOA.
IERSD (initially named as Meteorological Institute) was the first to begin meteorological observations in Greece. Since 1858, meteorological observations are conducted on a regular basis, thus IERSD holds the oldest meteorological database in Greece. IERSD focuses on meteorology, climatology and climate change modelling, climate change impacts and adaptation, solar and wind energy, atmospheric pollution, physics of the atmospheric environment, resource management and sustainable development, hydrology and water resources management.
IERSD has extensive experience in European funded projects in climate change impacts and climate change adaptation, such as: LIFE ADAPT2CLIMA, LIFE UrbanProof, MED-GOLD, SOCLIMPACT, LIFE TERRASCAPE, LIFE PRESPAWATERBIRDS.
Within LIFE-IP AdaptInGR, IERSD leads producing future climate projections based on RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 for the 13 Regions of Greece and for the pilot areas under study. EAA also leads the monitoring of the impact of the pilot projects towards increasing resilience to climate change and contributes to monitoring & evaluation of policies for adapting agriculture to climate change.
