The 8th consecutive Three-Day Training Seminar, held within the framework of LIFE-IP AdaptInGR Project on the Adaptation of the Peloponnese Region to Climate Change and organized by the Green Fund and the Peloponnese Region, was completed today, Friday, June 28, 2024, in the Conference Hall of the Laconia Governorate, in the city of Sparta.

On behalf of the Peloponnese Region, the Seminar was inaugurated by the Deputy Governor for Energy, Environment and Circular Economy, A. Adamopoulos, while greetings were delivered by the Deputy Governor of the Regional Unit of Laconia, Th. Veroutis, and the Mayor of Sparta, M. Vakalopoulos.

Thematic Deputy Governors of the Peloponnese Region for the sectors of Infrastructure and Networks, Spatial Planning and Real Estate, Culture and Tourism, the Regional Civil Protection Coordinator, representatives of the Directorate of Agricultural Economy and Veterinary Medicine of the Region and the local branches of OFYPEKA, GEOTEE and the Laconia Forests Directorate of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, as well as representatives of academic and research institutions, also participated as speakers.

The rich agenda of the Three-Day Training Seminar included interesting discussions and presentations, with the main axes being the existing policies (strategies and plans) for adaptation to climate change, the integration of the climate dimension in actions and projects, good practices for climate-vulnerable sectors, the available financial tools, as well as ways in which the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR project can support the adaptation of the Peloponnese Region to climate change.

Extensive reference was made to the relevant Regional Plan for Climate Change Adaptation (RPCA), the content of which was the subject of analysis and expert positions, particularly in areas such as the coastal zone, water resources, the primary sector, with emphasis on agriculture, and the natural environment (biodiversity, ecosystems, forests). At the same time, stakeholders were trained in the methodology for assessing the climate resilience of infrastructure required for projects of the new NSRF 2021-2027 programming period, as well as in the context of preparing Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs).

It is worth emphasizing that the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR Project includes, among other things, the implementation of pilot studies and projects in priority areas for adaptation to climate change and, especially for the Peloponnese Region, studies for assessing the impacts of Climate Change on the landscape and archaeological sites have already been completed. Specifically, the Hellenic Society for Environment and Culture (ELLET) - one of the 18 partners of LIFE-IP AdaptInGR - has completed the climate vulnerability assessment and protection studies of the landscape and land uses and our cultural heritage for the Pylos - Monemvasia route and for the archaeological site of Ancient Messina, respectively.

The number of participants who attended the Three-Day Training Seminar on the Adaptation of the Peloponnese Region to Climate Change, such as executives of technical and other services of the regional government and professionals in the primary sector, confirms the success of the event.

Finally, it is noted that corresponding events are planned for the other Regions of the country, while corresponding Seminars and Information Days have already been held in the Regions of Western Greece, Crete, Ionian Islands, Western Macedonia, Central Greece, North Aegean and Central Macedonia.
