LIFE-IP AdaptInGR: 8th Info-Day on the Adaptation of the Region of Peloponnese to Climate Change

Within the framework of the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR Project, the 8th Regional Information Day on the Adaptation of the Peloponnese Region to Climate Change was completed ον June 20, which took place in Kalamata, and was organized by the Peloponnese Region in collaboration with the Union of Greek Regions (UNR), the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE), and the Hellenic Society for Environment and Culture (ELLET).

On behalf of the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MEEN), which is also the coordinator of the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR Project, the Secretary General of Natural Environment and Water, Petros Varelidis, participated. After emphasizing the need for proper information and awareness-raising of local communities regarding the impacts of climate change and their adaptation to it, he pointed out in his speech on the topic of “Water Resources Management Policies” that it is necessary to introduce two new parameters in the management of water resources, on the one hand desalination and on the other hand water reuse.

For his part, the Governor of Peloponnese, Dimitris Ptochos, announced the creation of a Climate Change Data Monitoring Center for the Peloponnese Region, based in Kalamata, as well as the establishment of a Unified Water Management Agency. He also announced training and education actions on climate change and adaptation to it, along with the use of new technologies.

The reasons and impacts of climate change, as well as the need for the Peloponnese Region to adapt to Climate Change, were also confirmed in his speech by the Secretary General of the Academy of Athens and National Commissioner for Climate, Professor Christos Zerefos, stating that in the future the risk of desertification is looming for all areas of the Eastern Peloponnese.

The 8th Info-Day on the Adaptation of the Peloponnese Region to Climate Change, organized within the framework of LIFE-IP AdaptInGR Project, was attended by the Governor of the North Aegean, Konstantinos Moutzouris, the Governor of Western Greece, Nektarios Farmakis, the Mayor of Kalamata, Thanasis Vassilopoulos, the President of the Green Fund Board, Ioannis Androulakis, the President of the Board of Directors of OFYPEKA, Maria Papadopoulou, the President of the ELLET Environmental and Cultural Education Council, Zoe Polymeropoulou, and others.

The Conference concluded with interesting screenings (ELLET) and the questions and interventions of civil society representatives who participated in the event, contributing decisively to further clarification and highlighting of the expected environmental, economic and social impacts of climate change, as well as the measures that could be taken for their adaptation and self-protection.
